Time 2 Talk

What is it?

Time 2 Talk (T2T) is a community organised group that was organically developed following the sad passing of a young African- Caribbean man who had suffered with mental health difficulties.

The groups primary aim shall be to generate support for African Caribbean men who historically and to the present-day

  • experience high levels of discrimination in all major British institutions.
  • have low levels of engagement with health and wellbeing services and,
  • are disproportionately held in acute mental health settings.

A membership or collective of ‘persons of interest’ will be developed to support the group to develop an effective and sustainable community organisation.

AIMS
  • To create a safe, supportive, and confidential space for men of African – Caribbean descent and men from other communities to meet.
  • To offer dedicated individual therapeutic talking sessions which will be available upon request.
  • To hold frequent community ‘open’ meetings that provide opportunities to promote community engagement and encourage cross generational interaction.
  • To organise separate adult and young people meetings as required to talk about how they experience wellness and mental health difficulties.

To promote community engagement and promote opportunities, ideas and that can improve physical health and mental wellness.

INTENTIONS
  • Develop a Young person’s ‘Participation’ that would provide support, feedback, guidance, and opportunities for personal development. The group shall organise activities, workshops and events that provide support, peer mentoring, training opportunities and positive social experiences.
  • To hold regular community meetings to inform African- Caribbean men about wellbeing and mental health.
  • To inform African- Caribbean about the connection between their identity/culture and mental/wellbeing.
  • To consider the connection between mental health and physical health.
  • To work in Derby’s African- Caribbean community to
  • help stimulate collaborative working and co working locally,
  • utilise local resources and,
  • provide services such as workshops, training and mentoring.
  • Work with statutory services such as City Council, CAMHs, Education Dept and Young Offender Service. The group shall provide ‘lived experience’ feedback and support for the development of these services.
  • To provide support to men from all backgrounds.
  • To signpost individuals and family members where this is appropriate.
