Backstory Project – Elders Stories
We’re looking for Backstory Champions, great listeners, communicators and research enthusiasts to volunteer for our Backstory project.
Our Backstory project will acknowledge and celebrate the journeys of Derby’s first-generation, some of whom are no longer with us.
As a Backstory Champion, you will help us to…
- coordinate and capture interviews with participants.
- carry out in-depth community origins research.
- carry out in-depth research into those early days in Derby.
- support the capture of first-generation funeral programmes and eulogies.
- gather and consolidate photographic, recorded or written information.
- share inspirational stories.
- develop a lasting legacy.

Interested? Here’s what, you should know…
Backstory Champions shall be conscientious and conscious in the deployment of their duties at all times. You will be working with elders, family and friends, often as they reminisce about those who have passed. These moments will be poignant. It is imperative that you work in a consistent respectful manner throughout. You will play a key role in the success of the project and the overall ambition.
- You must be team player, but able to use own initiative.
- Research and/or project experience would be helpful but not essential.
An interest in African-Caribbean culture, heritage and artistry and understanding of Black British history would be great, but not a must. Reasonable out of pocket expenses will be covered.
DACCI are looking forward to working with a group of likeminded people who understand the necessity and obligation to preserve the contribution of our generation of pioneers.
We must give honour where honour is due.
