Elders Questionnaire

Elders Appreciation

Elders are the bedrock of any community. Their wealth of knowledge and experience play a significant role, influencing how families and communities lead their way of life.

Many of our elders who travelled to these shores are now in their 80s and 90s, some, no longer with us. There is a clear and present danger of losing their life experiences and more importantly knowledge forever.

Now, one thing is for sure… our elders could tell many stories of life in Derby… a time when we supported and looked out for each other… a time when we had a strong sense of community.

It is hard to truly acknowledge our elders… if you do not truly comprehend their journeys… It is imperative for your wellbeing to have an insight into your family’s history.

Many of us are on the precipice of heritage oblivion.

Here are some questions for you to ponder…

  1. How many of you know about the district or parish where your parents and/or grandparents were born?
  2. How many of you know about their early years and schooling?
  3. Can you travel to your parents and/or grandparent’s homeland and walk in their footsteps?
  4. What were the circumstances that led to the decision to leave their homeland?
  5. What was their plan?
  6. How many of you know about your parent’s journey to England?
  7. Where did your parents live when they first arrived in England?
  8. Did they settle in Derby immediately? If yes, Where did they live? How did they live? Where did they work?
  9. What was their experience of Derby in those early years?

There are many questions that could be asked and so much to learn.

You do not know what is missing until you realise what you have missed.

Building on the great work already undertaken we will work together at a greater depth to learn more about the foundation of our community in Derby. It is important and fundamental cog in our journey of rediscovery

We are experts at normalising the not normal.

Elders Questionnaire

DACCI have developed an Elder’s Questionnaire to support the community in a conscious attempt to mitigate the current position.

The form is comprehensive, but not complete, so many question will come to mind as you progress. There will be supplementary sheets to capture these Q&As.

The form will be challenging for some, but necessary, as it will allow future generations to understand ‘who they are’ and ‘where they come from’.

The form is set for a first-generation sibling to ask their mother and father or the first-generation sibling child to ask their grandparents.

This must be an immediate focus for our community.

Answers given will allow families who participate to…

  • know more about your parent’s history.
  • find out more about your family’s history.
  • Know more about yourself.
  • understand what life was like upon arrival in England.
  • understand what life was like to live and work in Derby.
  • allow you travel to your parents’ native homeland and walk in their footsteps.
