About DACCI CIC

DACCI (Derby African Caribbean Community Initiative) CIC, incorporated 24th January 2024, was established to cultivate togetherness and build the resilience necessary to uphold a strong sense of community.

Our mission… to provide programmes of events and activities that will engage, enlighten, empower, and enhance the African Caribbean community in Derby.

DACCI will promote excellence in all that we do whilst we embrace our heritage and celebrate the rich diversity of our African Caribbean culture and artistry.

DACCI deem it our duty to help those who want to help others. We will work in unison with African Caribbean led community groups and businesses. DACCI will strive to extend their reach and promote their endeavours. Signposting members to their services and/or place of business.

DACCI are willing to take on the responsibility to bridge the gap to realise our community’s full potential. Together with our African Caribbean led community groups and businesses, DACCI will proactively seek to identify gaps in current community provision and address the position for the advancement of our community. Whether that be…

  • health and general wellbeing
  • mental health
  • academic and/or physical education
  • social and/or economic welfare
  • cultural knowledge and overstanding
  • social events
  • recreational activities
  • awareness groups
  • advice and guidance
  • confidence building and skill development workshops
  • vocational support
  • dedicated community groups (i.e., Young Adults Group)
  • evening and weekend classes
  • fundraising
  • professional and academic networking
  • working with African and Caribbean diaspora networks
  • support for sick and vulnerable community members
  • promote companionship
  • prevention awareness

We are committed to meeting on a regular basis. We aspire to organise events and activities throughout the year for our African Caribbean community and other communities in Derby.

Our Children

Many African Caribbean children lose their ambition at a young age. There are factors that recur which discourage our children and ultimately, they do not attain their full potential. The reasons for this circumstance are varied, the perpetual consequences commonly known.

DACCI aim to be a positive force for our children. A platform that will build a confident, self-aware and independent generation of young adults. We strive to enrich their academic and social experiences whilst simultaneously upholding a strong sense of community.

We seek to motivate and inspire, encourage growth and unity by providing a comfortable environment that promotes freedom of expression. A space to allow each to be the best version of themselves so they can achieve whatever they put their mind to and excel.

Our Young People

Our young people face significant challenges… many of which conceal cyclic negative outcomes which have generational impact. DACCI believe in the mantra ‘We Are One’ and that the community is ‘Better Together’. A major effort will be made to provide our young people with worthwhile alternatives to the common themes and practices that riddle our community.

DACCI acknowledge the necessity to ensure our young people have the support, advice and guidance they need so that they can contribute to the sustainability of our community and offer back to society.

In collaboration with our partners, we will strive to…

  • engage, educate and empower.
  • support their welfare and wellbeing.
  • harness their ambition.
  • help each achieve their full potential.
  • offer exposure to a wide pertinent range of career paths.
  • expand personal networks and opportunities.
  • increase engagement with young people from other backgrounds.
  • create a place for our cultural identity to thrive without compromise.
  • deliver a dynamic environment.
  • become a positive force and a constant source of social value.
  • create a sense of community.
  • spread a consistent message of togetherness.

Our Elders

Our elders are pillars of our community. Pioneers who left their homeland and settled in Derby with dreams and aspirations. They came with honest hardworking intentions to bolster the rebuild of Britian after World War II. Our elders contributed a great deal to society.

They endured so much discrimination and overt racism… substandard and overpriced living conditions, health and social welfare inequalities, the “colour bar” and criminal injustice. Employment opportunities were limited, primarily manual labour, working long unsociable hours in factories, foundries, transport and the health care sector. Often for low pay.

But our elders persevered, they forged a community and raised their families.

Elders are the pride of any community. Their efforts and struggles must be acknowledged and held as an example to enlighten future generations. Their wisdom and courage used to develop and sustain our community.

DACCI will work strenuously to ensure our elders are rightly recognised, appreciated and receive the accolade and support they deserve.

“A community’s strength comes from within”.

Together with our partners we commit to…

  • recognise their efforts.
  • capture their stories.
  • deliver support with cultural relevance.
  • offer wider support to help our elders stay active and engaged.
  • hold social activities that celebrate our heritage, artistry and culture.
  • preserve and protect the contributions of those who made Derby the city we call home.

We will promote the introduction of a forum to give our elders a collective voice and the opportunity to influence DACCI activities decision-making.
